Sand Hollow Well Development

Sand Hollow Reservoir is a very unique reservoir. Not only is it designed to store water on the surface, it is also designed to recharge the underlying aquifer.

Sand Hollow Reservoir is the only one of its kind in southern Utah in that it was designed and constructed to leak into the underlying aquifer. It is estimated that the potential exists for the reservoir to add another 300,000 acre-feet to the underground storage.

The Sand Hollow well field is developed in Navajo Sandstone due to the sandstone’s ability to store and transport groundwater. As water passes through the sandstone, it is naturally filtered and cleaned. Ground water pumped from wells near the reservoir only requires chlorination prior to delivery into our homes.

Currently, 13 wells have been drilled around Sand Hollow Reservoir. The District expects to develop additional wells in the future.
